I had a similar experience just a few weeks ago when I climbed up a little cay in Exuma Bahamas called Thunderball (named after the James Bond movie filmed there). When you get to the top of this 25 foot “rock” there are a few holes in the middle that go straight down into a cave with water below. I heard the view inside was beautiful but couldn’t imagine dropping that far down into unknown waters. The talk the 9 yr old gave herself was nearly exactly the talk I gave myself – trying to shut out the voice that said, “don’t do it, who knows what will happen!” It took about 15 minutes before I could do it – I was literally paralyzed as I looked through the jagged small hole imagining myself jumping through it. I finally did it and after splashing down and resurfacing, I was of course rewarded with the most beautiful scenery – a shimmering cavern with smooth shiny walls and sunlight pouring in through the hole to light up the whole cave. The fall down was also exhilarating – a bonus – but we all know the journey is nearly always as good as the destination.
